History

7-A-SIDE RUGBY

Although the origins of rugby date back to the Middle Ages in various European countries, its rules were truly codified between 1845 and 1848 by students at Rugby School and Cambridge University in Great Britain.

Scrum of rugby players

Despite the emergence of numerous rugby variants over the years, such as thirteen-a-side, beach rugby and flag rugby, the most popular formats remain fifteen-a-side and seven-a-side. All these variants share the same basic rules, particularly with regard to tackling, passing strictly backwards and the way scrummaging takes place, which varies according to the number of players on the field. In seven-a-side rugby, the game is characterized by speed and intensity. At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, matches last just fourteen minutes, but they are extremely demanding, with more sprints and tries than a fifteen-a-side rugby game. The scoring methods are the same as in fifteen-a-side rugby: a try is worth five points, a conversion adds a further two points, while a drop-goal or penalty is worth three points.
